Dead End | Ulrome

The Yorkshire Coast erosion is at its most noticeable in Ulrome in East Yorkshire, where the road is crumbling into the sea

The Old Ulrome To Skipsea Road | Shifting Sands

As recently as 15 years ago, the coast road between Ulrome & Skipsea was the main bus route between the two small seaside towns. Having a regular bus service meant that the local caravan park was a thriving summer destination for people to enjoy the miles of sandy beach. Over the last decade, not only has the grass boundary between the road and the clifftop eroded away and crumbled to the beach, 5 metres below, but the road itself has now started to disappear.

While I was photographing the road, I met Mark, who used to live in the area and remembers using the busses when the grassy area between the road and the cliffs was over 20 metres wide. That’s a lot of erosion in one lifetime.

Naturally, the loss of the regular bus service and subsequently the loss of the actual road, has made Ulrome a dead end. The signs of a settlement on its last legs are all too clear.
